Chic Traveler:  Yifat Oren

Occupation:  Event planner extraordinaire

Hometown:  Los Angeles

Yifat Oren & Associates is the team responsible for creating some of the most perfect and magical events around the globe including the recent nuptials between Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, and Molly Sims and Scott Stuber.

I was lucky enough to catch Yifat unpacking at home after a two-week trip to Israel followed by a few days in NYC.  After a gorgeous lunch of veggie soup and a veggie salad (both Oren and hubby Jonathon are incredible cooks, no surprise there) she let me observe her unpacking her cases.  Here’s what I learned:

What is/are the Stephanie Johnson bag/bags that always make the trip?

I’m a bit of an SJ addict, and I travel with no less than six (!) Stephanie Johnson bags in tow.   Here’s how I use them to stay organized:

My SJ Large Flat Pouch houses all my bronzers, concealers, powders, blush and blush brush.  I use a matching SJ Medium Flat Pouch for all of my ‘eye stuff’ like mascara, eyelash curler, shadows and eye pencils.  I love the Jenny Train Case (mine’s a ‘vintage’ print from several seasons ago) to carry toiletries and miscellaneous items.  Necklaces go in tiny zip lock bags and I let the closed clasp pull out of the bags about an inch.  Then I place them all in the SJ clear flat pouch that accompanies the Jenny.  Voila, they’re tangle free and all in one spot!

For international travel, I stow foreign currency in a SJ Mumbai Buff Zip Case.

Your must-pack essentials?

I don’t leave home without a pair of nail scissors, because I always get hangnails!  I also keep a pair of tweezers on hand to keep up with my eyebrows.  Other beauty must-haves are:  NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer, Le Labo fragrance in Fleur D’Oranger compounded at Barneys, L’Occitane Ultra Rich Body Cream, and Tom Ford nail color in Coral Blame.

What’s always in your carry-on?

My iPad, a good book, and magazines.  I must catch up on my reading!

Do you have a favorite travel destination, or a location that particularly inspires you?

My favorite locations to plan an event include Villa d’Este in Lake Como and anywhere in the Riviera Maya/Mayakoba, Mexico.  My dream location for an event?  Either San Miguel de Allende, Mexico or The Pond in Lake Placid.  I also love Twin Farms in Vermont.

What’s your personal travel style?

I’m an ‘off the beaten path’ kind of girl.  I like to go somewhere and stay a while, especially with the kids.  Having said that, I prefer to rent a house or apartment when I travel, and Paris is a favorite destination.  I’m no good going somewhere where there is nothing to do for a long time, so ideally Paris and then the country for a week where the kids can run around.

Favorite pre-travel beauty routine?

Lately, I’ve been getting gel manicures before I travel.  They last 2-3 weeks, and I like that I don’t have to worry about keeping up my nails while I’m away.

What’s the next piece on your Stephanie Johnson wish list?  An iPad case.

Luckily, Stephanie was nice enough to gift me one in the Palm Desert Orange print!

It’s fun to return to Venice after a short absence and find everything new and reimagined after only a few short weeks.  Here’s what’s new.

EAT

Next to our offices near Abbot Kinney is a breezy little wine bar called Le Zinque.  Rose Ave. is the next hot area with the opening of several restaurants and bars in the past few months.  Give Moon Juice a try for organic pressed juices and almond milk made in-house.  Oscar’s Cerveteca is down the road for fish tacos, margaritas and outdoor seating.  Venetians are eager for the impending opening of Cafe Gratitude, which will bring another organic farm to table experience to the hood.  And next door Hostaria is set to open, providing a much needed dose of Italian flavor with tons of fresh gluten free options.  Gjelina is still the poster girl for hip.

SHOP

Pick up some whole bean chocolate at ChocoVivo, where beans are organically grown and fair-trade.  Keep shady with a Eugenia Kim hat from Satine.  Heist is still my go-to on Abbot Kinney, where I stock up on all the Isabel Marant I can afford (not much).  Buy a fragrance at Le Labo – also on Abbot Kinney – and get a custom label.  Great hostess gift!

Experience the space at Deus Ex Machina (God from the Machine) even if you can’t afford a 50k custom bike like the one they made for Orlando Bloom.  Try on a biker hat instead and sip a coffee, or show up for a weekend BBQ.  Bikes are custom and they shape their own surfboards.  Yes, your bike will come with a surf rack if you want it.  Or not (like Jason Mraz).

DO

Always fun to hop a bike (or a skateboard – very Venice, you know) and check out the newest additions in street art from Invader (guess someone finally snagged the space invader on my street), JR, Shepard Fairey, and the like.  Enjoy.
